THIS IS WHERE THE MAGIC HAPPENS: A novel and memoir-writing workshop
Time: 7:00-9:00pm Thursdays once a month for 6-12 months, beginning 10/23/2014
Place: West Village, NYC
Have a half-written novel or memoir languishing on your computer? This is your chance to get it up on its feet.
Share your work and receive generous, clear-eyed feedback, nurturing support, and a little bit of anti-procrastinatory ass-kicking in an intimate (3-6 students), respectful, creative community environment.
Each month we’ll read and comment on a novel or memoir-in-progress. In a format designed to accommodate the real time that book-length work takes, each student will get his or her work read twice over the course of six to twelve months, depending on enrollment. Moreover, every time we meet, we’ll each get a chance to check in about our progress and set goals for the coming month. If students find it helpful, we can also keep each other posted online on our daily or weekly word count, page count, or number of hours spent writing.
The only writer to have twice received the American Library Association Stonewall Award for Fiction, instructor Ellis Avery is the author of two novels and a memoir. Her novels, The Last Nude (Riverhead 2012) and The Teahouse Fire (Riverhead 2006) have received Lambda, Ohioana, and Golden Crown awards, and her work has been translated into six languages. She teaches writing at Columbia University and out of her home in the West Village.
Ellis is also available for one-on-one manuscript consultation at $80/hour. Details and references available on request.
